Lower Missinaibi River

Mattice to Moosonee– 12 days

Dates:

This is the second stage of a 22 day Missinaibi River trip from Peterbell to Moosonee. Stage one, Peterbell to Mattice, is followed by this trip. You may wish to consider undertaking the complete trip, or just one section of it.

The lower section of this, the longest protected, unimpeded wilderness waterway of Northeastern Ontario will take us through the topography of the Canadian Shield in the first few days and then drop us onto the James Bay Lowlands.

With more than 32 rapids on this 321.5 km section of river and spectacular drops such as Thunderhouse Falls and Hell's Gate, there is something for everyone on this stretch of the river. Spectacular scenery, remote wilderness and rich history complement the wildlife and make this an unforgettable experience.

For the novice tripper / paddler, there will be ample time to learn and practise skills under expert instruction. Our group size will be small.

For those joining us in Mattice, you will meet up with the shuttle in Cochrane, on Highway 11, early in the morning on Day One. You may leave your vehicle in a safe location in Cochrane, as we will be returning from Moosonee by train to Cochrane to end the trip.

After a good night's rest in Mattice, we will spend the next 12 days exploring the river and surrounding topography. Weather cooperating, we will have one full day, to explore Moosonee and historic Moose Factory. We will depart Moosonee by train at 6:00 PM, arriving in Cochrane later that evening ending our trip.

Cost includes all canoes and paddling equipment, shuttles, train fare, Provincial Park fees, group kitchen equipment and home cooked meals on the river.

Cost: $2,160 plus taxes
